Long-term chromospheric activity of non-eclipsing RS CVn-type stars

چکیده
Context. The IUE database provides a large number of UV high and low-resolution spectra of RS CVn-type stars from 1978 to 1996. In particular, many of these stars were monitored continuously during several seasons by IUE. Aims. Our main purpose is to study the short and long-term chromospheric activity of the RS CVn systems most observed by IUE: HD 22468 (V711 Tau, HR 1099, K1IV+G5V), HD 21242 (UX Ari, K0IV+G5V) and HD 224085 (II Peg, K2IV). Methods. We first obtain the Mount Wilson index S from the IUE high and lowresolution spectra. Secondly, we analyse with the Lomb-Scargle periodogram the mean annual index 〈S〉 and the amplitude of the rotational modulation of the index S. Results. For HD 22468 (V711 Tau, HR 1099), we found a possible chromospheric cycle with a period of ∼18 years and a shorter cycle with a period of ∼3 years, which could be associated to a chromospheric “flip-flop” cycle. The data of HD 224085 (II Peg) also suggest a chromospheric cycle of ∼21 years and a flip-flop cycle of ∼9 years. Finally, we obtained a possible chromospheric cycle of ∼7 years for HD 21242 (UX Ari).

Detection of the Neupert Effect in the Corona of an RS CVn Binary System by XMM-Newton and the VLA
The RS CVn-type binary σ Geminorum was observed during a large, longduration flare simultaneously with XMM-Newton and the VLA. The light curves show a characteristic time dependence that is compatible with the Neupert effect observed in solar flares: The time derivative of the X-ray light curve resembles the radio light curve. This observation can be interpreted in terms of a standard flare sce...
متن کاملMg ii chromospheric radiative loss rates in cool active and quiet stars
The Mg ii k emission line is a good indicator of the level of chromospheric activity in late–type stars. We investigate the dependence of this activity indicator on fundamental stellar parameters. To this purpose we use IUE observations of the Mg ii k line in 225 late–type stars of luminosity classes I–V, with different levels of chromospheric activity. We first re–analyse the relation between ...
متن کاملOn the determination of oxygen abundances in chromospherically active stars
We discuss oxygen abundances derived from [O ] λ6300 and the O triplet in stars spanning a wide range in chromospheric activity level, and show that these two indicators yield increasingly discrepant results with higher chromospheric/coronal activity measures. While the forbidden and permitted lines give fairly consistent results for solar-type disk dwarfs, spuriously high O triplet abunda...
متن کامل2 v 1 1 5 D ec 1 99 3 Orbital Variability in the Eclipsing Pulsar Binary PSR B 1957 + 20
We have conducted timing observations of the eclipsing millisecond binary pulsar PSR B1957+20, extending the span of data on this pulsar to more than five years. During this time the orbital period of the system has varied by roughly ∆Pb/Pb = 1.6 × 10, changing quadratically with time and displaying an orbital period second derivative P̈b = (1.43±0.08)×10 −18 s. The previous measurement of a lar...
متن کاملChromospheric Activity of Rosat Discovered Weak-lined T Tauri Stars
We have started a high resolution optical observation program dedicated to the study of chromospheric activity in weak-lined T Tauri stars (WTTS) recently discovered by the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS). It is our purpose to quantify the phenomenology of the chromospheric activity of each star determining stellar surface fluxes in the more important chromospheric activity indicators (Ca ii H & K,...
